The Dalmatian province where Dubrovnik lies used to be called the Republic of Ragusa and was one of the first countries to officially recognize the United States as a country. Sources vary, but some people place the recognition as early as 1776, which would make it the first country to do so, placing it ahead of the Kingdom of Morocco and France. The small region was the only area that was never under Ottoman rule based on a treaty signed in 1498. The treaty stipulated that Ragusa must pay annual tributes to the Ottomans, but it operated as its own autonomous country and established diplomatic relations with others nations.

The biggest attraction is the city center that is surrounded by a huge wall. Inside you will find several museums, shops, and restaurants. If you wander around long enough, you’ll find the entrance where you can walk on top of the wall around the perimeter and find some pretty incredible views.
